Mercedes Tuners CLS63 AMG Mercedes Tuning

As you can imagine, as Mercedes tuners, we love a good tuning story. Today we’ll recount Mercedes Tuning of a 2012 CLS63 AMG. Upgrading the performance to a whopping 665 horsepower. Here’s how it all went down.

Factory Specs

From the factory, this CLS63 AMG already had something special going for it. Particularly because the owner chose the performance package. Coming into the PRESSERtech Mercedes Tuners garage, this CLS63 had 550 horsepower and 590 LBS-FT torque. That’s simply amazing. When our CTO Todd Presser took the CLS63 out for a spin, it was obvious that despite the incredible numbers on paper, this AMG was missing a little bit of kick. “I can tell this thing has a lot of lag going on with it,” Todd said during our video of this tuning story. “This thing should just be jumping up when I hit the gas in sports mode.”

And as you can see at the 2:10 mark of the video, Todd couldn’t wait to get started tuning.

The Pressertech Mercedes Tune

There is no one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to performance tuning. A stage 1 tune on this car would increase the horsepower to 580 and the torque to 627 LBS-FT. This particular client chose a stage 2 tune. The Stage 2 Tune would produce eye popping numbers. Increasing the performance to 665 horsepower and 730 LBS-FT torque. Now that’s a Mercedes Tuners dream.

Now came the fun part for us. In the garage, Todd worked with the CLS63’s electric control unit (ECU) also commonly known as the electric control module (ECM). When Mercedes Tuning, whether we’ve popped the hood of a C-Class, E-Class, or another series. This process requires Mercedes Tuners to have an intense attention to detail and careful precision. The Results

And now it was time for the big reveal. After tuning the CLS63 we saw a 20% increase in horsepower. For this vehicle that meant a total 665 horsepower, and while we could think of a lot of ways to describe this tune, we’ll leave it simply with Todd’s words: “Good god, this thing is awesome.”

Mercedes Tuning Perfecting the Power of the Mercedes Benz C117 CLA250

Now and again, we all need a pick-me-up, and sometimes so does your car. In our shop we’ve been Mercedes Tuning or ECM tuning a gorgeous C117 Mercedes Benz CLA250 (watch the video here). It’s beautifully styled, with sleek lines and an excellent sports package. Now a power upgrade was in order to give this four-cylinder an extra boost. Prior to starting our work, we took the vehicle out for a test drive and noticed a sluggishness that could be dramatically improved with the proper Mercedes tuning. And, oh by the way, save our client a couple of miles per gallon in fuel efficiency.

The car arrived at the PRESSERtech garage, it performed at the stock flash, running at about 208 horsepower with 258LBS-FT Torque. We know from our experience as Mercedes tuners that stock settings often need adjustments to reach the car’s full potential. It’s not uncommon for a car to be purposely depowered in the factory. We could feel that this CLA250’s engine wanted to do more and take off better.

Talking to our client about the Mercedes Tuning

Strategizeing with our client, we had a couple of options available. A Stage 1 tune would bolster the horsepower to 250 and the torque to 295LBS-FT, providing a nice boost from the original specs. But we knew we could make the engine run even better than that. The vehicles owner landed on a Stage 2 tune, which would elevate the performance tune to 260 horsepower with about 310LBS-FT torque. We were more than happy to oblige.

Now we had our marching orders in place, our CTO Todd Presser got to work. With an emphasis on the correct methods of Mercedes tuning. You want an expert technician to make the adjustments, and we’ve spent over 30 years maintaining and Mercedes tuning Mercedes Benz vehicles. Most noteworthy, we’re talking about some very delicate work to adjust the car’s electronic control unit (read more about ECUs here).

Starting the Performance Tune Process

The ECU was carefully removed, Todd ran diagnostics and reviewed it with specialized programming tools. Then it was a matter of taking the tuning file and building the tune. Our PRESSERtech dog-in-residence Holly checked in on Todd’s progress as he worked to crack the code on the original factory settings.

Ultimately, the careful tuning behind-the-scenes paid off, with this Mercedes CLA250 performing at a staggering 50 more horsepower and 50 more lb-ft torque than when it arrived at our shop. Mercedes Tuner M278 Engine Mercedes Performance Tuning of the E550

Mercedes M278 Engine

We discussed how a Mercedes Tuner can really take advantage of the M278 Engine and its awesome V8 block. The M278 Engine with its twin turbochargers, one per cylinder bank and gasoline direct injection with multi spark ignition. It has a stock power of approximately 402HP and 443LB-Ft Torque. It makes this a fantastic engine and definitely no slouch in the performance car category. Now compare that to the Mercedes M157 Engine that come standard on the 63AMG models that pulls out a staggering 550HP and exceeds its Torque of 531LB-FT. As a writer for The Drive says, “It’s a sport sedan that’s hard to beat“. Even though it’s a very similar engine, you’re going to pay a heavy price for that upgrade, or are you? Perhaps not with Mercedes Performance Tuning.

Mercedes Performance Tuning – The Process

Now with the M278 engine and the M157 Engine being so very similar, why is one putting out so much more power than the other? We were ready to start and set about Mercedes performance tuning an E550 to see how close we could get to the Mercedes E63 AMG. Quite frankly, even we were amazed by what our results showed. As Mercedes Tuners, we painstakingly adjusted the inner workings of the car over and over. We were making minor changes along the way until we were ready to unleash the beast.

Then we started by adjusting the rev limiter in precise detail and removing the speed limiter especially for those customers taking their car to the track. Taking time to optimize the boost pressure in the bi-turbos and made adjustments to the fuel, air and timing maps to achieve the most efficiency possible. We did all these modifications while maintaining the safe margins of stock components. The end result was a whopping 510HP and 590LB-Ft of Torque nearly equaling the E63’s numbers. Being happy with this performance we established this benchmark for our Stage 1 performance tune.

A Mercedes Tuner Dilemma, Stage 1 or Stage 2 Tune

We’re very happy with our Stage 1 Mercedes Performance Tuning. But, it became apparent that this E550 wasn’t even breathing heavily. So smooth was the tune and performance of the M278 engine we soon realized that the car still had so much untapped potential. We had just scraped the surface with the Stage 1 tune.

Back off to development! Again we painstakingly continued adjusting the car and testing it on a dyno in what seemed like a daily theatrical event. Every time, the car produced more and more. Performance tuning is not an easy process, it takes time, patience, long hours and a lot of testing. We kept going encouraged by what were incremental improvements. We wanted to keep the car’s stock components so the only thing we were doing was ECU tuning. All the hard work and effort paid off and our Stage 2 tune was ready and what a tune it is!

Mercedes Performance Tuning Results

Our Mercedes Performance Tuning of the M278 Engine was putting out an amazing 540HP and 705LB-Ft of Torque at the flywheel. Each car and testing location will put out slightly different results and even compensating for the loss of power at the wheels and elevation of the dyno (this particular test of the 550 at 3500 feet above sea level), this car is amazing! These Mercedes performance tuning numbers are produced with no other modification to the car except for ECU tuning of the M278 Engine. This Mercedes remains a smooth driving machine but when you put the pedal down, the power is there!

Mercedes Performance Upgrades S600 V12 Twin Turbo M275 Engine

Today was an interesting day and we were asked about Mercedes Performance Upgrades on the S600 V12 Twin Turbo M275 Engine. Interesting for Pressertech but more so of what we can really do for these older Mercedes-Benz. So what could we do for a 15 year old 2003 S600 V12 Twin Turbo with the M275 Engine? While we’re always confident in our work, we were excited to get this opportunity. See how we improve on what Car & Driver called “instantaneous and overwhelming thrust“.

The S600 V12 Twin Turbo is already a monster of a car but how can we make it better? The simple answer is with our Mercedes Performance Upgrades and our Perfect ECU tune package. The 2003 Mercedes-Benz S600 V12 Twin Turbo has the incredible M275 Engine. The stock engine boasts a fairly good package as it is with 493HP @ 5000 RPM and 590 LB-FT of Torque at 1800-3500 RPM. That’s Impressive.

The Process of Performance Upgrades on the S600 V12 Twin Turbo M275 Engine

So we went to work and pulled the ECU, that’s where the performance upgrades start. That’s the really easy part as most people are quite capable of doing this. It’s a simple job to find the location, remove some plastic shielding, pull a few wire harnesses and we’re off to the races so to speak. Just remember when you are doing any Mercedes performance upgrades, you can’t really put this back in any other order than it was taken out and the wire harnesses cannot be confused or substituted.

Bringing out the beast in the M275 Engine

Once the ECU is removed, we start our job. We open the ECU metal cover, some are easier than others and connect it to our state of the art race software. The first thing that we do is copy the existing flash of the ECU so that we can always go back to stock performance at the customer’s request. Then we continue and write the new flash to the ECU of the M275 Engine. The flash is nothing more than race inspired programming and does not harm the engine at all. After all, that’s why you go to a professional shop to do this.

The Results – Performance Upgrades on the S600 V12 Twin Turbo M275 Engine

Once flashed the ECU is resealed and put back into the vehicle. At that point we’re ready to turn the key and start the car up. Now it’s time for the test drive! The Mercedes S600 came to life like never before. After all, our ECU Performance Perfect Tune has just added approximately 100-110 HP and 120-130 LB-FT of Torque. That brings the car up to a whopping 593-603 HP and 710-720 LB-FT of Torque at Stage 1. Each tuned vehicle will see those approximate results but they will vary slightly based on many things such as altitude and locale.

Mercedes ECM Replacement – Virgin ECU

We received a call on Wednesday from a local repair shop. The call was a normal one and went something like this; “Hi, this is Sam. We have a Mercedes SL550 and the Mercedes ECU has failed. We need a Mercedes ECM Replacement. After checking with Mercedes and they want $3000 plus for a new one. Can you help?” The answer was simple, “of course we can”. After a few calls back and forth, we arranged to meet at the customer’s repair shop. It was a surprise how big it was. On arrival the car was already in the bay and we went through our cursory checks. After hooking the car up to Star/Xentry, the Mercedes-Benz software, we confirmed that the car did in fact have a faulty Mercedes ECU. No problem we said.

The Mercedes Replacement ECU Process

After we removed the old Mercedes ECU which is an extremely easy process of unplugging the harnesses and then replaced the Mercedes ECM with Pressertech’s Virgin Mercedes ECU. This is our Mercedes ECM Replacement. After a couple more minutes of marrying the ECU to the vehicle (doing an offline activation on Star), we were ready to do final diagnostics. We hit the keyless-go button and voila! The car started and was ready to go. The price? Well that was the best part for the dealer. The customer was thrilled with the $850 for the Virgin Mercedes ECU.

After we left his shop soon after but received a call a couple of days later. He and hi is customer were thrilled with the service and the savings and he then told us that his customer was interested in the Pressertech Performance Mercedes ECU tune. We gave him the price and he conferred with his customer and we had the go ahead. As a matter of fact, since we had the old ECU core and was able to read the DAS, we were able to pre-program another Mercedes ECU, complete with the Mercedes Tune and deliver it overnight. After quick swap and needless to say, the dealer was thrilled and the customer thinks his new car is out of this world.
